Wooden bench lantern

Locals were holding an over 200-meter-long wooden bench lantern to
celebrate the upcoming Lantern Festival, which will fall on the 15th day
of the 1st Chinese lunar month, in Fanchang County, Anhui Province on the
evening of Feb.23, 2007. Such a lantern is composed of many 2-meter-long
wooden benches which are decorated with festive lanterns. On the days
before and after the Lantern Festival, villagers will hold the wooden
bench lantern and walk around the village.

After government decisions to slash deposit interest tax and increase
interest rates for third time this year, which were announced over the
weekend, some economists believe all necessary regulatory policies have
been put in place for the Chinese economy, and some others hold the macro
control should be further tightened.

Despite the disagreement, they are all optimistic about the development
trend of the economy in the second half of this year.

Some experts believed most major economic indicators for the first half
year, including GDP growth, retail sales and CPI, were higher than
expected. For instance, the key inflation indicator rose 4.4 percent
year-on-year in June, well above the government-set alarm level of three
percent.

Lin Zhaohui, a senior researcher with Guotai-J&A, a leading securities
firm, noted China’s economic growth pattern has since 2005 turned from
“high-growth with low inflation” to “higher growth with relatively high
inflation”.

The economic growth in the second half year will be driven mainly by
consumption, which usually peaks in the July-December period, and
investment, which tend to rally.

Given continuous export duty adjustments, accelerated appreciation of
Renminbi and faster growth in investment, foreign sales, which used to be
the third economic driving force besides the above two, are likely to
slow down its expansion, according to Lin.

Meanwhile, consumption and investment will conspire to push CPI further
up, of which such counters as grain and meat prices will remain high from
July to December, Lin forecast. This will exert pressure on macro
economic control in the six-month period, he believed.

However, some other economists argued there existed no overheating in the
national economy in the first half year and price hikes were due to
structural factor. After deducting foodstuffs, core of the index was not
high, they believed.

Xie Fuzhan, head of the National Bureau of Statistics, said the economic
growth in the January-June period remained on a largely healthy track.

An economist by profession, Xie said the gap between investment growth
and consumption growth narrowed more or less, as the investment growth
was 3.9 percentage points lower than the year-earlier level and
consumption growth was 2.1 percentage points higher.

Zhu Baoliang, deputy head of the economic projection department of the
State Information Center, said the rapid trade-surplus growth in the
first half of the year resulted from the fact that exporters had been
rushing against deadlines for export tax rebates to be cut or scrapped
altogether.He said the growth will slow down noticeably in the second
half.

In the wake of the cool-down in foreign trade, related investment will
experience a slowdown in growth rate too. Since no overheating will occur
in the second half year, further macro control measures will be
unnecessary, Zhu said.

weekend, some economists believe all necessary regulatory policies have
been put in place for the Chinese economy, and some others hold the macro
control should be further tightened.

Zimbabwe will not be represented in any of the team sports at next year’s
Olympic Games after the national women’s hockey side ended the African
Zone qualifying tournament winless in Nairobi, Kenya, at the weekend, The
Herald reported on Tuesday.

The Zimbabwe women’s side found the going tough at the week-long
tournament where they only managed to score one goal and conceded 14 in
four matches against hosts Kenya, Namibia, South Africa and Ghana.

The women’s Olympic Games qualifying tournament was held simultaneously
with the men’s competition in Nairobi.

Zimbabwe were not represented in the men’s qualifiers after the Hockey
Association of Zimbabwe failed to raise enough money to send a team.

The Zimbabwe women’s team were only able to travel to Nairobi after they
received some financial assistance from the Olympic Solidarity through
the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee.

The failure by the team to make the grade at the Nairobi tournament will
leave Zimbabwe without a representative side in any of the team sports
during next year’s Olympic Games in Beijing.

With a total of six gold medals in the same edition of the Pan American
Games, Brazilian swimmer Thiago Pereira equaled the record set by the
Cuban gymnast Eric Lopez in 2003.

Being the fastest competitor in the 200m breaststroke, 200m backstroke,
200m individual medley and 400m individual medley, and taking part in the
teams that won the gold in the 4×100m and 4×200m freestyle relays,
Pereira said that he would still wait for the end of the swimming
tournament to be totally “aware” of his record-breaking mark.

Following his sixth victory in his sixth final at the Games on Saturday,
the athlete said he feared tiredness on the last day of the tournament.

On Sunday, he swam in the 100m backstroke and in the 4×100 medley relay,
winning the bronze medal in the former and the silver in the latter. Such
results might lead to the thinking that the swimmer, who also broke five
Pan Am Games records in the competition, finally showed signs of
exhaustion after so many finals, proving his point in the press
conference the day before.

“I am no superman,” he responded, when journalists asked if he had ever
dreamt of becoming a superhero. He stressed that the achievements in the
Pan Am Games were the consequence of a process initiated in Oct. 2006,
when he started to target the event.

“Now I can see that was worthwhile,” he added.

Pereira, who also overcame the number of Pan Am golds (five) won by the
all-time best swimmer Mark Spitz, stressed that his plans from now on are
to focus on the preparations for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Brazil swimming’s overall performance presented expressive improvement
from the scenario in the 1990s, when most of the significant titles were
won by two athletes, Olympians Gustavo Borges and Fernando Scherer. In
Rio de Janeiro’s Games, including Pereira’s medals, Brazilian male and
female swimmers got a total of 27 medals in the event, up from the
previous record of 21 medals in 2003 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

With a total of six gold medals in the same edition of the Pan American
Games, Brazilian swimmer Thiago Pereira equaled the record set by the
Cuban gymnast Eric Lopez in 2003.

Being the fastest competitor in the 200m breaststroke, 200m backstroke,
200m individual medley and 400m individual medley, and taking part in the
teams that won the gold in the 4×100m and 4×200m freestyle relays,
Pereira said that he would still wait for the end of the swimming
tournament to be totally “aware” of his record-breaking mark.

Following his sixth victory in his sixth final at the Games on Saturday,
the athlete said he feared tiredness on the last day of the tournament.

On Sunday, he swam in the 100m backstroke and in the 4×100 medley relay,
winning the bronze medal in the former and the silver in the latter. Such
results might lead to the thinking that the swimmer, who also broke five
Pan Am Games records in the competition, finally showed signs of
exhaustion after so many finals, proving his point in the press
conference the day before.

“I am no superman,” he responded, when journalists asked if he had ever
dreamt of becoming a superhero. He stressed that the achievements in the
Pan Am Games were the consequence of a process initiated in Oct. 2006,
when he started to target the event.

“Now I can see that was worthwhile,” he added.

Pereira, who also overcame the number of Pan Am golds (five) won by the
all-time best swimmer Mark Spitz, stressed that his plans from now on are
to focus on the preparations for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Brazil swimming’s overall performance presented expressive improvement
from the scenario in the 1990s, when most of the significant titles were
won by two athletes, Olympians Gustavo Borges and Fernando Scherer. In
Rio de Janeiro’s Games, including Pereira’s medals, Brazilian male and
female swimmers got a total of 27 medals in the event, up from the
previous record of 21 medals in 2003 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Consumption reported a rapid growth in the first half of the year. There
are three main reasons.

First, the rapid growth of resident income promoted the increase of
consumer demand. Thanks to good benefits of enterprises, income level of
staff workers generally increased. In addition, the government has
implemented a series of policies such as increasing civil service’s wage,
providing subsidies to low-income residents, raising the minimum wage of
migrant workers and supporting agriculture by introducing various
preferential agricultural policies. As a result, the income of both urban
and rural residents surged significantly. Per capita disposable income of
urban residents grew by 14.2%, four percentage points higher than that of
the same period of last year. The actual growth rate of cash income of
farmers reached 13.3%, 1.4 percentage points higher on a year-on-year
basis and 1.2 percentage points higher than that of the first quarter.

Second, governments of different levels have increased input into social
security, and made great efforts to improve education, health, housing
and other livelihood issues. Residents are more optimistic for the
future. With their confidence being strengthened, consumer demand also
increased.

Third, the pace of consumption upgrading has been accelerated. Among the
limit-above merchandises, the wholesale and retail of automobile rose
36.7%; household appliances and audio-visual equipments grew by 20.7%;
construction and decoration materials increased 41%; furniture rose
43.4%. The growth rates of above categories were 9, 1.5, 16.6 and 22.6
percentage points higher than those of the same period last year
respectively. This shows that the consumption in key areas such as
automobile and housing was growing at a rapid rate.
